    cancer
    It's everywhere!

The extra services for the fast have given me the opportunity to visit my next-door neighbor at Rex. Since January, he's been in a lot of pain from was assumed to be shingles. Turns out he has cancer in his lower spine, and possibly a bit in his lungs.

The guy across the street who's wife taught [info]sammic's sunday school class when she was little has cancer in his pancreas and liver.

And now my genetic material contributor is in town (read: Mebane, NC), as his father is dying from pancreatic cancer, too. He is in town with his oldest new son, Michael, who must be about seven or eight. I've never met either of my half-brothers, and the prospect makes me a bit nervous.

    Joanna
At this point it is easier just to write one entry to thank everyone for their well wishes. We are all doing well, if not a little weary.

It is hard to have a journal when you have nothing to say except: "please let me sleep." That buys you lots of pity points from the insomniacs.

    Pinehurst
How many months has it been since we got any rain around here? It would have to rain the whole day when I have to drive [info]sammic and Mera to Pinehurst for an ultrasound.

And what is with doctor's offices these days? Why even bother to get there early to fill out paper work, when we're going to have to sit around for an hour anyway? Geesh!

The sneak peak at our new one was, of course, well worth it. The baby looks markedly like Mera did, but I guess there's only so much you can tell with a greyscale sonic image. =)

The work day at All Saints went better than expected. I'm glad it is over. That, on top of server migrations at work, and a slew of other things I can't even remember have rendered my weekends busier than my weeks. One big blur, but at least things seem to be calming down a bit. Now, if I could just get snowed in.

    busy, busy
This past weekend, I was in Atlantic, NC, helping my friend (and old boss) put a metal roof on his house at the beach. It was a whirlwind trip, but I certainly got a healthy dose of exercise and sun. The weather was beautiful.
Christian (said friend and old boss) had been talking about doing this for years, enough so that I really felt the urge (and a bit of obligation) to go. After all, he only made me pay for materials when he help me put a rubber roof on part of my house. Or maybe it was a purely selfish desire left over from the bachelor days that I could still legally do. Either way, the old shingle roof on Christian's beach house was definitely in its death throws, and after this last hurricane, he finally decided to replace it. Unfortunately, this same hurricane damaged [info]sammic's parents condo in Atlantic Beach, so there was no place for Samantha and Mera to stay. i.e. I went by myself. I was surprised as to exactly how much I didn't like that. Christian even said he could tell I was a "family man" nowadays. We worked hard during daylight hours, but Saturday night I just kinda watched them party. We were definitely the main attraction, and lots of locals came to drink beer/watch us work/tell us what we were doing wrong. They were a very interesting lot; they made me very thankful for the friends and family I have.
The weekend was relatively uneventful to have such a feeling of transition attached to it.

My new-ish, second job at the Rockford is going well. I've only been hosting so far, but this Saturday I'll actually start waiting tables. The people that work there seem to honestly be very nice, and the patrons give me the chance to practice my humility. It is a good balance to an office job.

My parents are having a pig picking next Saturday (10/15) - please come!

oh yeah, and we are having another baby...

    First Molar
Mera is cutting her first molar. Boy is she ever in a good mood! Teething causes excess saliva, which produces runny noses and diaper rash - so she really is a poor baby. It's amazing how life bars no holds even for the little ones: when it rains, it pours.

Sudoku rocks my world. I'm going to start a notebook of all the sudoku puzzles I've done.

I love it when my boss leaves town. He'll be gone several days next week, too.

I got my old/new-old hours back, so I don't have to leave for work until 9, which, I had forgotten, is really, really nice. Being able to play with Mera for a few minutes before leaving is great. We ran out of coffe this week, but I am definitally looking forward to a morning cup with [info]sammic - the best way to start the day!

Now, where shall we move to: the farm in Oxford, NC with my parents, or Europe? I can't decide between Dresden and Luxembourg.

    ich heisse super fantastisch
weekends are way too short. I needed to get my lawn mowed, but the rain kept me from it all weekend. I'm afraid the neighbors are going to form a lynch mob. My grass is at least knee high, and those nuts mow the park across the street because the city doesn't do it often enough for their liking!
Microsoft is expanding in our building, and so there is now all this construction noise. The project manager for the job stopped by today to say that they ought to be done by mid October. woo-hoo! My boss chewed me out for coming in at our agreed time last week. At least I thought it was agreed - he says it was a miscommunication. I knew getting to "work" the first two hours every day from home was too good to be true. We're supposed to talk about it on Wednesday; maybe I'll get those hours back, but I doubt it. At least I didn't get any slack for taking an extended lunch last friday to dine with [info]skwyrm_zen. (It was really, really good to see him!)
If Mera gets any cuter, I don't think there will be anything left of her, for I will have hugged her to smithereenes. I've got her trained now so that when I ask, "who's the best one?", she throws her hands up in the air and yells, "da-da!" Well, sometimes, anyway. We're working on it...

    breakout and steroids
Three Mondays ago I was trying to prune back some of the Lugundrum behind my house, and came across these vines that spanned three or four plants. I cut a lot of them out and pulled them to the road to be picked up by the city. The following Saturday I pulled out some more and then preceded to mow the yard. Once I started getting blisters and itching last Monday, I finally did a bit of looking around on the 'net to find they were poison ivy vines!!! By Wednesday it had broken out on both arms and the left side of my stomach, and by the time I got to the doctor on Thursday, it was to places better left unmentioned, not to mention my chin, neck, and my right eye was half swollen shut.

But man that prednisone kicks in quick. With my adverse appearance, I had no problem getting half of Thursday and all of Friday off. That, combined with the holiday made for a nice vacation, complete with lots of Mera goodness and no yard work. I got to sleep on the couch (for fear of contamination), and after taking Clarinex, or whatever it was they gave me, I got the best sleep I've had in at least a year. It was a very surreal experience, and all in all, it could have been a lot worse.

By Saturday I was ready to vacate the couch, which was timed well, for [info]sammic threw her back out something fierce, and needed to occupy it. The addition of her parents heating pad has helped; hopefully she will be back to normal soon.

Next week, I'm being sent to Nashville, TN for some training on SharePoint Portal Server. You can imagine how much fun that will be. I have tried talking everyone, from my Mother-in-law to my best friend in Germany, into going with me, but I have no takers. I don't even know if I get to rent a car, so I may not even see any of the city. I was looking forward to not getting kicked in the side all night, but now I think I'd even prefer that to being stuck by myself for five days.

But I digress. Check out pootie-hootie:

    death and NPR
From Kindergarten to second grade I went to a small private school and saw twelfth graders everyday. I remember being astounded at how infinitely far away twelfth grade was. It was unfathomable, but soon that feeling faded and obviously no longer applies. I have now passed that milestone with regards to death, for it actually scared me the other day. Retirement, Net Worth, and Life Insurance take on new meanings, while at the same time becoming completely laughable. I'm sure this is only the beginning of comprehending one's own mortality.
NPR, on the other hand, becomes more and more entertaining. On the roof, we used to listen to World News from the BBC in the morning, and maybe to a little of Dick Gordan, but only since taking this office job and commuting almost two hours a day (or more, if church gets involved)have I been exposed to much more interesting parts of their programming. I heard my first April Fool's Day story, and I thought it was awesome. Bluegrass on Friday nights is great. Prairie Home Companion makes me think of Andy Damick and feel very white. And last weekend I went to the grocery store, and they were airing an phone conversation with Jello Biafra. who knew?

I haven't missed church because of a hangover in, well, at least a year. Saturday night's performance was quite an experience - and a brief jaunt back into the world of "nightlife" was throughly enjoyable, if not ill advised.

    solo
It's been very quiet around the house, being that Samantha and Mera are the beach with Grandma Glenda. Not that I've been there very much. Poor puppy dog has to spend all day in the crate. I'll be glad when they get back tomorrow.

At least I've been busy at work, even if it has been doing dumb crap. I have to restrict myself to uncovetable food (carbonated water, apples), or else it gets gone here before I can eat it.

Thanks to [info]naqerj, I have been obsessed with reading about Scientology all day. Wild, Wierd Stuff. Today I learned how to make a drunk person sober in a "very few minutes." Man, think of all the money you could make in one bar in one evening around closing time!

    Troy
For some reason, I'm a little nervous about my trip today to Troy, NY. Maybe it's because I've never made an incursion this far into Union territory before. (but who's afraid of Yankees?) It must be 'cause I'm not a developer, and I'm gonna go pretend like I am. Having one's geekdom challenged, or threated to be challenged, by bigger geeks than you is certainly daunting. All this should be mediated, however, by a short visit to the Godpapa hisself, [info]naqerj, and his beautiful wife, [info]aviendha1979. Borrowed a Carhartt jacket from my Father-in-law rated to -40 degrees, so I should be good to go.

But my journey to domesticated, sedentary husband/father is surely almost complete, because I really don't want to leave.
